About the tour
The wildlife diversity of Costa Rica is well-known and stunning to behold. In a very small country (about the size of West Virginia) Costa Rica contains over 500,000 species of plant and animal. This small Central American country is considered to possess the highest density of biodiversity anywhere on Earth. There are over 400 reptile and amphibian species, 250 mammal species, thousands of butterfly and moth species and almost 900 recorded bird species. And the opportunities we'll have there as nature photographers will be unparalleled!
We’ll travel to 5 different eco-lodges throughout Costa Rica. I won't name the exact lodges here due to copy-cat tours but some of the highlights include a Caribbean lowlands lodge with an aviary, a unique bird hide, and access to platforms especially designed for photographers with eye-level views of a feeding station where some of the most beautiful birds of Costa Rica can be photographed from close distance.
Also included will be places where other aspects of nature photography can be enjoyed such as a butterfly garden, a frog garden with colorful poison dart frogs and Red-eyed leaf frogs, specific hummingbird feeding and photo stations, and a trail leading to a set of spectacular waterfalls pounding down the cloudforest.
There is another lodge where we'll be in a middle-elevation rainforest around the active Arenal Volcano. From the lodge we will have great views of the almost perfect cone of the Arenal volcano towering above the emerald rainforest. Here too, the bird garden is set up special for photographers and we'll have endless chances at colorful birds.
Finally we will find ourselves descending to the central Pacific coast, where our small remote lodge has panoramic views of the mangroves in front of the Pacific Ocean on one side and the rainforest covered hills of Parque Nacional Carara on the other side. This place is ideal for observing and photographing Scarlet Macaws. They are often seen flying overhead or with some luck at eye level in noisy couples in the early morning or late afternoon. Here we will have two private boat tours on the Tarcoles River where we can expect to be overwhelmed by a wide variety of water-related birds.
The tour will end back in San Jose at a nice hotel on the outskirts of the city. Even here we'll have access to a flower garden and bird feeding stations where we can get some last minute images of more birds and Costa Rican beauty.
Here's your chance to fill your portfolio with awesome shots of colorful Costa Rican birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Not to mention the possibility of volcano and beach scenery. Be sure to bring lots of extra batteries and memory cards!
This is a photography tour. Most of our time will be spent in the field. There won't be any classroom sessions but critique sessions are optional as space and time allow. I will be photographing alongside participants on this trip but I will always be available to help you if you need.
All levels of photographers are welcome on my tours, from the beginner to the seasoned pro. While any camera can produce decent images of birds and other wildlife, I highly recommend a DSLR camera with interchangeable lenses and at least 400mm (500-600mm is much better) of lens power for this tour. I'll be using my Tamron 150-600mm lens almost exclusively during this tour, except when we do scenics when I'll use my 28-300mm lens.
Please join me in Costa Rica!
