About the tour
The Dolomite mountain range of northern Italy is one of the most breathtaking photographic locations on the planet. Also known as the Italian Alps, the Dolomites are made up of seemingly endless craggy mountains and completely photogenic traditional villages nestled below. The area of the Dolomites is a UNESCO world heritage site that boasts hundreds of peaks and at least 20 which soar to almost 10,000 feet. Add in a plethora of easily accessed mountain lakes which reflect the impressive mountains and you have yourself the recipe for perfect scenic photography.
Venice is a city like no other. Everything here floats, appears to float, or rides on water. Venice has no roads, no cars and no motorbikes. Everyone and everything gets around by boat. The city is made up of 124 small islands connected by canals and bridges. The entire city is a gorgeous photograph waiting to be taken. Venice is lined with ancient palaces and Renaissance buildings that are hundreds of years old. We’ll photograph the classic views of Venice as well as some hidden treasures, back alleys, high viewpoints, red-shirted gondola boatmen, and much, much more.
This tour is the perfect blend of a classic, highly photogenic Italian city and an absolutely stunning mountainous region. We'll have 10 days to capture amazing photographs and with my help and guidance you will come away with tons of brilliant imagery.
Best of all we go as a small group of only 6 participants and me, your professional leader.
This is a photo tour, which means we’ll be traveling together and I will be photographing alongside you. Most of our time will be spent in the field in both city and mountainous areas. One-on-one image review, and group critique sessions are optional as space and time allow.
Fly into Aeroporto Marco Polo International Airport in Venice arriving sometime during late afternoon or early evening. We meet in the evening in Venice, Italy.
May 28- May 30
The next two full, and one half days will be spent photographing the highlights of this unique and beautiful Italian city. All of the photo sites in Venice are within the floating city area and walking or water buses/taxis are the best way to get to and then capture compelling images, so we won’t have a vehicle while in Venice.
May 30- June 4
On the 30th we’ll move by mini-bus to the Dolomites region, where we’ll be based in Castelrotto and Lake Misurina. Both are charming mountain towns nestled below the peaks of some of the most picturesque Alpine regions. We spend 3 nights at each of 2 different and wonderful hotels in the mountains. Each day from the 30th of May through the 4th of June we’ll get out early into the surrounding countryside for magic light photography. During mid-day, there will be time to explore, dine, hike, do more photography or simply relax as you wish. We’ll then go as a group to another one of my favorite destinations somewhere in the Dolomites each afternoon/evening in order to capture the magic light on the landscape which occurs around sunset.
On June 5th the tour ends back in Venice at the Marco Polo airport at about noon. Fly home this day after 4pm.
All levels of photographers are welcome on my tours, from the beginner to the seasoned pro.
You should be reasonably fit and able to walk medium distances (up to 1.5 miles) over sometimes rough terrain, and up fairly steep inclines for this trip. There aren’t any really long hikes on this tour, but we will be walking on lots of trails, along lakes, up plenty of steep, uneven steps and across open fields in order to capture our magic-light photos. The type of camera you use doesn't matter, and non-photographer friends and spouses will enjoy this trip as well. Anyone who enjoys Italian culture, classic cityscapes, gorgeous mountain scenery, and friendly people will love this tour.
