Corkscrew Audubon Sanctuary, Florida.
The Audubon Society's Corkscrew Sanctuary, near Fort Myers, Florida is one of those places that myself and endless numbers of other nature lovers are genuinely thankful for. It is one of the few Bald Cypress forests of Florida that contains old growth (never logged) swamp habitat. Corkscrew offers easy walking on more than 2 miles of winding boardwalk that meanders through all sorts of wonderful wildlife habitat. This year when we visited during my Florida birds photo tour, we were treated to an unending variety of bird and other wildlife action like I've never seen before. We had flocks of fishing egrets and herons, owls and hawks hunting, raccoons, snakes, huge alligators and more. Anya even spotted a Florida Panther (and I got a half-second glimpse of it as well). If you find yourself in southwest Florida, be sure to pay a visit to Corkscrew sanctuary. It remains one of my all-time favorite locations to be a nature photographer. Here I captured a Pileated Woodpecker as he was eating berries. Click HERE to read the rest of the newsletter.
