The Summit of Vatuvulu Volcano, Wayasewa Island, Fiji
Wayasewa Island is part of the Yasawa chain of islands in the south Pacific nation of Fiji. This is one of the greatest scenic views in all the world. Like a string of ocean pearls, other islands stretch across the Pacific as far as you can see. The closest one in the image above is Kuata Island. Getting here is a bit of an adventure. From a tiny little resort at beach level, you climb up through the jungle and scramble over volcanic rocks for about 2 hours, all the while trying to ignore the tropical heat. Pick some mangoes for refreshment off the trees growing along the faint trail as you head up, up, up. Finally you'll get to a flat area where the grasses are taller than people and when you find an opening, the above view greets you in all its glory. Yes, that's Anya posing for me on a rock at the volcano's edge. Click HERE to read the rest of the November newsletter.
