Don's Destination - Machu Picchu, Peru
I know you've all seen endless shots of the famous Machu Picchu "lost city" in Peru. I had also seen tons of images from there as well and to be honest didn't really get excited to visit a place that everyone's been to. Couple that with the very expensive cost (all told about $800/person/visit) and I was prepared to be underwhelmed when Anya and I were in the area and debated, then decided to go. Let me change my tune right here - I was blown away by this magical place and will always put it up there as one of the greatest days ever. We arrived early and were among the first visitors that day. I had looked up on Google Earth where I wanted to be for my photography. We hiked to that spot and found ourselves alone with the view you see above. Cloud banks came and went in an ethereal, spine-tingling series of waves. One minute the entire scene would be obscured by the fog and then moments later it would lift and slowly reveal the spectacular ruins perfectly balanced on the mountainside at 8000 feet. I felt at one with the earth during that morning and in the perfect silence I easily imagined being among those ancient people who built and lived at Machu Picchu. We stayed all day and explored every inch of the area and many hours later when staff members told us it was time to leave I immediately longed to go back and see what the light would do to this fascinating place the next time.
