Savegre Lodge, Costa Rica
Savegre Lodge is a luxury resort located in a cloud forest between Costa Rica's capital city San Jose and the Pacific Ocean. The lodge and their extensive grounds encompass almost 1000 acres of virgin forest surrounded by Los Quetzales National Park. This is the place to go if you'd like to see and possibly photograph a Resplendent Quetzal - truly one of the most gorgeous birds in existence. When Anya and I visited earlier this year we did see several Quetzals but high quality photographs of this species were hard to come by. Enter a whole bunch of other Costa Rican birds and I was a happy photographer. Savegre has several hummingbird feeders and other bird stations throughout the grounds. Set up your tripod and long lens nearby one of these and photograph all day. The Silverthroated Tanager shown above is one of my favorite images from our four days at Savegre. If you plan to visit Costa Rica and want a good recommendation I'd say that for birders or photographers you can't miss with Savegre. Email me if you want some insider secrets.
