Don's Destination - Catalina State Park, Arizona
Officially Spring started yesterday. Depending on where you are, Spring may have started long ago, or not (we got 5 inches of snow 2 days ago and winter seems determined here in Colorado). But if you are looking for a scenic Spring getaway with lots of photography potential, get over to Catalina State Park in Arizona. This 5500 acre reserve, just north of Tucson is one of my favorite springtime destinations. While the winter rains weren't enough this year to cause a wildflower superbloom, you can always find some flowers in March and April. And of course the Giant Saguaro Cactus make for interesting subjects no matter what. Catalina State Park has lots of hiking trails, good camping and plenty of desert wildlife to keep photographers busy. I like to start early in the morning on the birding loop trail and I carry my wildlife lens and walk slowly to photograph desert birds. Of course I never can pass up an impressive scene full of Giant Saguaros like my shot here so I also carry my wide-angle lens. Click HERE to read the entire March 2018 newsletter.
