About the tour
The light and the landscape of the Tuscany region in Italy simply has to be experienced to be believed. If ever there was a perfect place to be a photographer, Tuscany is it. Golden light streaks across the horizon, making the endless rows of grapevines, fruit trees, and fields of flowers glow with an incredible warmth. Ancient villas, chapels and farmhouses are nestled below rolling hills, and blue skies are filled with puffy clouds.
Colors are everywhere. Patterns, shapes and textures almost beg to be photographed. Quaint hill towns, rich in culture and full of friendly, welcoming locals will be calling out to us as we travel...and we’ll photograph it all. Best of all we go as a small group of only 6 participants and me, your professional leader.
This is a cultural photo tour, which means we’ll be traveling together and I will be photographing alongside you. Most of our time will be spent in the field in both city and countryside areas. One-on-one image review, and group critique sessions are optional as space and time allow.
Fly into Peretola International Airport in Florence arriving sometime during late afternoon or early evening. We meet in the evening in Florence, Italy.
The next two full, and one half days will be spent photographing the highlights of this historic and beautiful capital of Tuscany. Most of the photo sites in Florence are within a compact area and walking is the best way to see and capture compelling images, so we won’t have or need a vehicle in Florence. Buses and taxis are always available if you simply don’t want to walk.
On the 10th we’ll move by mini-bus to southeastern Tuscany, where we’ll be based in Pienza, a charming hill town in the heart of the most picturesque region in all of Tuscany. We spend 6 nights at a wonderful Bed and Breakfast in Pienza. Each day from the 10th through the 16th we’ll get out early into the surrounding countryside for magic light photography. During mid-day, there will be time to explore, dine, taste wine, do more photography or simply relax as you wish. We’ll then go as a group to another one of my favorite destinations somewhere in the countryside each evening in order to capture the magic light on the landscape which occurs around sunset.
On May 16th the tour ends back in Florence at the Peretola airport at about noon. Fly home this day after 4pm.
All levels of photographers are welcome on my tours, from the beginner to the seasoned pro.
You should be reasonably fit and able to walk short distances over sometimes rough terrain for this trip. There aren’t any long hikes on this tour, but we will be walking up some steep, uneven steps and across open fields in order to capture our magic light photos. The type of camera you use doesn't matter, and non-photographer friends and spouses will enjoy this trip as well. In fact anyone who likes culture, cuisine, wine, gorgeous scenery and friendly people will love this tour.
